Escape

The following paragraph is an entry in a flash fiction contest that required exactly 100 words (not including the title) and had to include the words jade, effervescent, and conduit.

Escape

Jade peaked through the window shade, scanned the street, murky with pre-dawn fog curling under the streetlights, sure the sounds she heard were from his motorcycle. Nothing there. Powerful motor sounds purred behind her; she jerked around. Nothing there. Maniacal laughter bubbled through clenched teeth, unlike her usual light, effervescent giggling. Bruised goose bumps on her arms spread under her shaking hands, crawled across her neck into her scalp. The mechanical ratcheting started again, reverberating through her body, a conduit for the fear vibrating in her mind. The explosion flashed through, but she did not hear anything. She was gone.
